How to Cleanse Crystals
A practical guide to cleansing crystals — the methods most commonly used in practice, which stones can handle each method, and why it matters.

Crystal cleansing is the practice of clearing a stone of accumulated energetic associations — returning it, symbolically, to a neutral state. Different traditions approach this differently. What matters is consistency and intention, not adherence to any single method.
Why Cleanse Crystals?
From a purely symbolic perspective, cleansing a crystal is an act of resetting its ritual context. If a stone has been handled frequently, gifted, purchased secondhand, or used in intense ritual work, cleansing ritually marks a fresh starting point. It is also simply good practice for items you handle regularly.
Running Water
One of the most widely used methods. Hold the stone under running water (preferably cool, natural water) for 30–60 seconds while holding a clear intention of cleansing. This method works well for hard, non-porous stones. Do NOT use this method for: soft stones (selenite, calcite, fluorite), stones with a Mohs hardness below 5, or stones that may rust or corrode.
Sound Cleansing
Sound vibration — from a singing bowl, bell, or tuning fork — is one of the safest universal methods. It works for all stones, including those that should not get wet. Strike the bell or bowl and let the sound wash over the stone, repeating until the tone settles naturally.
Moonlight
Leaving crystals under the light of a full moon is a traditional and gentle cleansing method. Set stones on a windowsill or outdoors overnight. This method is safe for all stones and carries the symbolic resonance of lunar cleansing — useful for moon-associated stones like Moonstone, Selenite, and Labradorite.
Smoke Cleansing
Passing a stone through or near smoke from incense, herbs, or wood resin is another widely used method. Use sustainably sourced materials. This is safe for most stones. Be aware of air quality in enclosed spaces and ensure good ventilation.
Selenite Plate
Placing a stone on a selenite slab overnight is commonly used for gentle passive cleansing. Selenite itself is considered self-cleansing in most folk traditions. Note: selenite is very soft (Mohs 2) and should not be exposed to water.
